The Legal and Moral Right of Palestinian Resistance

Well I hate it when the blood starts flowin’

But I’m glad to see the resistance growin’

– Gil Scott Heron, Johannesburg

The majority of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are refugees from the 1947-49 ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Since 1967, the tiny enclave of (now) 1.5 million people has been under belligerent occupation. The most recent spate of attacks on the defenceless, highly populated area were in the form of aerial and naval bombardment, using hundreds of tonnes of high explosives. The bombing by the Israeli state of the besieged Palestinian territory is congruent with the history of colonial oppression from Zionist forces. Resistance against the Israeli state by Palestinian groups occurs to varying levels of intensity, from symbolic attacks with no military gain, to self-defence through damaging Zionist machinery and weapons. Nonetheless, Palestinian acts of resistance are not viewed as such in the west, with the…

Smoke and flames are seen following what police said was an Israeli air strike in Rafah in Gaza Strip

Palestine’s Right to Defend Itself

All eight members of the Kaware family were killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday when an Israeli missile struck their home in the Gaza strip, wounding 25 others in the process. Israeli officials described this as “an error” — the home was meant to be bombed without the family in it.

Transgender Women Claim They Were Mistreated At W.Va. DMVs

CBS DC

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Two transgender women say they were ordered to take off their makeup, jewelry and wigs at West Virginal Division of Motor Vehicles offices or they would not get new driver’s license photos.

In the process, they say they were belittled, and called names like “it.”

“The manager told the agent I was working with, ‘It’ needs to remove ‘its’ makeup and false eyelashes,'” said Kristen Skinner, a Ranson resident.

Skinner, 45, left the Division of Motor Vehicles office in Charles Town in January with a license featuring her new female name and a headshot she says looks nothing like her.

Trudy Kitzmiller, 52, described a similar experience in May at the Martinsburg office. Downtrodden, she left without a new license and kept her old one with the wrong name and an inaccurate photo.

“They dehumanized me,” said Kitzmiller, a Mount Storm resident.

Late last month, the…

Rooftop Solar Power in Australia Forced Fossil Fuel Plants to Give Away Free Electricity

An explosion of rooftop solar cells combined with low demand made for some funny accounting in Queensland, Australia, last week.

Solar power, now the fourth-biggest source of energy in the state, has driven prices so low that on July 2, the cost of electricity from fossil plants was minus $100 (AUD) per megawatt hour. Essentially, the coal plants had to give away free power or pay for people to use it rather than shut down their facilities, which would have been more expensive to operators.

As Boy Genius Report points out, it’s currently winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and Queensland has built too many coal plants, so we shouldn’t jump to wild conclusions. Still, with increased investment from China to North Carolina, the future is looking bright for solar energy.

BGR:

Queensland is a special case due to local overbuilding of coal power plants and bad policy decisions. This…

Man Who Shot at Cops During No-Knock Raid Acquitted on All Charges

“When I knew they were policemen, I lay down, face down. I kept saying, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry.’”
July 10, 2014

After a 9 hour deliberation, a jury has found Adrian Perryman, not guilty on all four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

The incident that led to the charges against Perryman happened during the pre-dawn hours of October 26, 2010 in San Antonio, TX.

SAPD’s tactical response unit was executing a no-knock search warrant. The occupants in the house at the time were Perryman, his girlfriend Rebecca Flores, and Flores’s 3 year old grand daughter Savannah.

When Flores saw two shadowy men on the security cameras, she woke up Perryman, and tossed him his gun.

According to MySA News, Flores recalled the events of that night to the jury. “I put my body over Savannah’s,”…
